Placenta Encapsulation

For hundreds of years, in cultures all over the world, the freshly birthed placenta is honored for its tremendous role in nourishing the newborn. The placenta is also respected for its miraculous healing benefits to the birthing person and can be consumed as early as minutes after delivery. Encapsulation is the most commonly accepted form of consuming one's placenta in the Western cultures.

The female body is so remarkable, that it creates a unique organ specifically for the growth and well being of the baby growing inside it’s womb. When the placenta is delivered, it is rich with nutrients and hormones that were sustaining new life. Women who have consumed their placentas have reported:

  • Increase iron level

  • Give you more energy

  • Reduced postpartum bleeding

  • Increase breast milk production

  • Balance your hormone levels

  • Have a happier postpartum period

Many women who have experienced baby blues, or postpartum depression, report having a happier postpartum journey while taking their placenta pills during subsequent postpartum journeys.

Benefits

There is little scientific, evidence based research on placenta encapsulation, but there are a few studies in the works.  Most current information on consumption of placenta is anecdotal.

Research

Your placenta is handled with care and processed into capsules in your home or a loved one's home, surrounded by the same loving energy it grew in. The process can begin as early as a few hours after the birth of the placenta. Whether you are birthing at home or at a hospital, you will be provided detailed instructions on how to care for your placenta prior to encapsulation. This is commonly done by the partner, family member or hospital staff. Your partner will call me after you have delivered, to schedule a time that works for all of us, for me to begin the process. The entire process consists of two, two hour visits. You can choose to watch the process if you’d like, ask questions, take photos and see where your bundle of joy lived and grew for the last 9 months. You can also choose to rest while I’m processing your placenta which is perfectly fine as well. Once the process is complete, you will be left with a jar of placenta pills and a perfectly clean kitchen. What’s not to love?
